Phil Mickelson, design team outline vision for Mickelson National Golf Club of CanadaPosted: 10 Sep 2015 News
An animated and passionate Phil Mickelson met a packed media room at the Hamptons Golf and Country Club in Calgary on Thursday.
The five-time major champion and world golf hall of famer outlined why his first golf design project in Canada will be in the Calgary area. This was Mickelson’s first trip to Calgary since he was a teenager and he said he was blown away by the landscape and scenery in the Springbank area.
The three-time Masters Champion said it would be a great honour to compete against the best in the world on a course that he helped design, but also wants it to be playable for all levels and family friendly. He hopes to have the course built in three years and host a top PGA event like the Canadian Open in the years after.
Joining Phil on the podium were world-renowned golf instructor and course designer Rick Smith along with Calgary’s Barry Ehlert, who’s the managing partner of the local Windmill Golf Group. That group has partnered with the famous lefty to build the project in Springbank.
