Par 3 holes can often be the most memorable and exciting holes on a golf course. Sometimes based on land that is awkward, a ravine or wrinkle in the land. Sometimes architects use par 3s as connectors to get to other areas. You hope each par 3 is different and has character enough to leave a golfer with an impression forever. Mickelson National has a very unique area where there are 3 par 3’s which all touch each other, all going in different directions, distances and feels. I affectionately call it the Par 3 Grotto.
The first of the trio is #3. Inspired by a moon scape, waste bunkers and fescue will handcuff your senses. Heading east you will see a snowman shaped green tucked in a small amphitheatre. The back tees are around 185 yards, typically down fan. There is a bail out area just left of the green but from the back tee only quality shots are the order of the day. From the forward tees, around 110 yards, it will be possible to putt it, you can run it up on to the green, no carry distance required. #3 gives you a real taste of the psychological and visual obstacles that Mickelson National will present. Make sure your sand game has some teeth, great white type teeth.
#8 is our shortest par 3 at 149 yards from the back tees and 96 from the forward tees. The right side of the hole shares the waste bunker and fescue mounds with #3. The mounds behind the green match up perfectly with the Rocky Mountains from just the right spot on the tee boxes. An artist’s view to be shared for years to come. The green is small but there should be some opportunities for birdies as you head back to the northwest.
#17 shares a tee box or two with #3, it heads back west in the opposite direction of #3. This is one of the main communal areas where cheer and banter will live. With a total of 6 holes in view, a hilltop, there’s lots to get lost in. From the back tees, it’ll stand 220 yards slightly downhill. Forward tees will be 145 yards. A gully with a small pond stands in front while a creek rides the right side. The infinity green never allows the golfer to see where the green ends. A huge wall of bunkers frames the hole in the distance. The magic of psychological hurdles, the wall of bunkers is on the left side of #9 fairway, only 400 yards away. And on top of all that golf porn, the Rocky Mountains set the stage for lift off.
Dreams and wagers will be crushed on #17, but a par will make you walk just a little bit taller. In between these holes are high spots where you can see all 3 par 3’s at once. It’s an exciting area for fellowship and golf challenge. Different clubs, different scores and each its own animal, with a look, feel and optimism that will inspire you. The chance of a hole in one, you hope on a memorable par 3, is of golfers dreams. The Par 3 Grotto is just that, par 3 pleasure, fulfilling all golfer’s fantasies.
Wait to you see number #13, 260 yards of stadium opulence!
See you on the site…….
